How to Identify Fake Payment QR Codes
Payment QR codes are standard for digital wallets, but scammers are increasingly substituting real merchant codes with their own.
Physical Tampering
Always check if the QR code displayed at a shop is a sticker pasted over the original. Scammers often do this in busy markets where merchants aren't constantly watching their counters.
If the QR code feels raised or seems to have different wear and tear than the rest of the display, ask the merchant for another payment method or double-check the recipient name.
Recipient Name Verification
Before hitting "Pay," always confirm the recipient's name in your app matches the merchant's name. Scammers often use names that sound similar to the business or just generic "Merchant Services" labels.
"A few seconds of verification can save you from a permanent loss of funds. Never rush a payment scan."
